Assam Rifles personnel appear before panel

The Justice C Upendra Commission probing death of Th Manorama Devi in Manipur on Saturday began examining four Assam Rifles personnel in camera amid tight security, commission sources said.

Sources said all the four Assam Rifles personnel accompanied by security personnel arrived at the commission's office at the state guest house at at 11 am and appeared before the retired judge.

The counsel for the Assam Rifles, Colonel Triveni Prasad and counsel for the victim, Advocate Lakhi Kanta Singh, were present at the time of examination of the Assam Rifles personnel, they said.

No media persons or civilians were allowed to witness the proceedings of the commission.

Th Manoram Devi was picked up from her home by Assam Rifles personnel on July 10 and found dead the following day.

Her death has sparked off widespread agitation in the state for the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
