Pappu Yadav in hospital: SC widens net

August 16, 2004 19:36 IST

Doctors, police officers and even judicial officers of Bihar were on Monday served show-cause notices by the Supreme Court as it began a probe into member of Parliament Pappu Yadav's stay in a hospital when he should have been lodged in a jail.

A Bench comprising Justice N Santosh Hegde and Justice S B Sinha issued notices to a sessions judge in Madhepura for issuing a production warrant against Yadav when it was not required.

Yadav had used the production warrant to roam around in Madhepura on May 3, on the eve of the general election despite the apex court cancelling his bail in a case pertaining to the murder of trade union leader, Ajit Sarkar.

In an inquiry report submitted before the court, District and Sessions Judge of Madhepura said that there was no reason for the sessions judge to issue the production warrant.

The court, which had earlier issued a notice to the Patna Medical College Hospital medical superintendent, on Monday issued a notice to the head of the department of surgery as also to the Patna senior superintendent of police.

The HC had directed on July 20 that Yadav be moved back to the jail from a hospital after investigating agencies informed the court that the accused had not spent a day in jail after the cancellation of his bail on March 12.
