Condemning Sunday's bomb blast at an I-Day function, which left 17 people dead, including ten children, AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya, president Prabin Boro and general secretary Amiya Bhuyan said the 12-hour bandh has been called to demand Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's resignation.

The state government has blamed the United Liberation Front of Asom for the blast.

"We want to send out a strong warning that crime against the student community will not be tolerated and [we] hold the government entirely responsible for the incident," Bhattacharya said.

On August 19, students will be asked to wear black clothes and badges and carry black flags to press for Gogoi's
resignation and protest against the "henious crime committed by the insurgents," he said.
