Sweets and curd -- this was the last wish of rapist-murderer Dhananjoy Chatterjee before he stepped onto the gallows early on Saturday morning.

Inspector General of Police (Prisons) Joydev Chakraborty told waiting newsmen emerging from the high-security Alipore Central Jail, where the convict was hanged at 0430 IST, that Dhananjoy was calm and composed.

Dhananjoy's wish, however, to donate his eyes remained unfulfilled as his family refused to give its consent.

''Dhananjoy bathed by himself inside his cell and then offered prayers. He was given a new shirt and pyjamas as per his wish, which he wore to the gallows,'' Chakraborty said.

Dhananjoy was sentenced to death for raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl in Kolkata in 1990.
