16 killed as rains batter Kerala

At least 16 people were killed and several injured as rains battered Kerala for the second day on Wednesday.

Ten people belonging to two families staying next to each other were killed when their houses were demolished in a landslip at Nellikunnu on Kuttiyadi-Thottilapalam route in Kozhikode district. The victims included three women and five children.

A couple and their three children were killed when waters from a collapsed check-dam submerged their home at Kulamavu in Idukki district.

A 14-year-old schoolboy died when a concrete slab fell on his head while he was waiting under a bus shelter at Neamom near Thiruvananthapuram.

Two others were admitted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram with injuries.

State Revenue Minister K M Mani said Rs 80 crore had been sanctioned for district collectors to take up relief and rescue measures.
