Sonia lends a hand to flood victims
August 02, 2004
Houses under the Indira Awas Yojana will be built for the homeless flood victims of Assam, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said on Monday.
After visiting three relief camps in Morigaon district, 97 per cent of which is under water, Gandhi said the Centre would soon start working on the scheme.
The three camps were Jagiraod College, HPC camp and another near National Highway 37 near Amolighat.
She assured the victims that all steps would be taken to ensure that the state tides over the problem created by the floods.
The United Progressive Alliance chairperson, accompanied by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and other party leaders, made an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of Nagaon and Morigaon district.
She also said that the Centre would draw up a plan to solve the recurring flood problem in the state.
She announced Rs 20 lakh from the All India Congress Committee to the victims before leaving for New Delhi.
