The Kumbh Mela is among the holiest festivals of India.

The Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which began in Ujjain on April 5, is taking place after 12 years.

Legend has it that aeons ago, as the Asuras and Devas wrestled for possession of the pot of nectar (kumbh) that grants immortality, four precious drops fell on Earth, creating four of India's holiest places. Millions gather at these spots -- Allahabad, Nashik, Ujjain and Hardwar -- every 12 years (one year for every day of the celestial battle) to take a dip in the holy waters and break the cycle of death and rebirth. This, in short, is the history of the Kumbh Mela.

Given its significance, the month-long Kumbh Mela attracts people from all over. Roughly 20 million people attend the Simhasta Kumbh Mela.
