April 17, 2004 17:52 IST

A union leader of the Food Corporation of India in Katihar, Bihar, Madan Mohan Singh has been arrested in a raid by police and the Central Bureau of Investigation probing the theft of Tagore memorabilia, including his Nobel medal, from the Shantiniketan museum, police said Saturday.

The raids were conducted by the local police which was assisting a CBI team, which had arrived here following a lead provided by its Dhanbad office.

They raided his residence on April 14 night and took him into custody.

The police said he was sent to jail under the Arms Act for possessing two unlicensed firearms and several rounds of ammunition which were found in his possession during the raids.

However, his links with those involved in the theft of Tagore's memorabilia were yet to be established.
