Top Gujarat cop sentenced to 5 years in prison

A top Gujarat police official and two of his subordinates were sentenced to imprisonment by a Junagadh fast-track court for beating up a detenu in police custody causing serious injury.

Additional Director General of Police (Training) S S Khandwawala was sentenced to five years and his subordinates to three years imprisonment, official sources said in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

The incident occurred 29 years ago in Porbandar when Khandwawala was posted as deputy superintendent of police in Junagadh district.

He along with Sub-Inspector B D Vaghela and head constable Rampal Sinh beat up Hazamer Sutrecha when he was in police custody.

Following a complaint by Sutrecha, the court ordered an enquiry, which led to the conviction of the officials.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Khandwawala and Rs 3,000 each on Vadhela and Rampal Sinh.

At present, Khandwawala is posted at state police headquarters in Gandhinagar. He has moved the high court for bail.
