67% polling in Ernakulam

About 67.07 per cent of the 10.88 lakh electorate voted in the by-election to the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday.

Official sources said 7,29,800 votes were cast.

The polling, which began on a dull note, picked up momentum as the day progressed.

The highest voter turnout was reported from Parur (70.87 per cent) and the lowest from Mattancherry (59.53 per cent).

Seven candidates, including M O John (United Democratic Front) and Sebastian Paul (Left Democratic Front-backed independent), were in the fray.

The election was necessitated following the death of sitting MP, George Eden.
