UP flood situation grim

The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh on Monday continued to be grim with rain-fed rivers, in spate at several places, having submerged 1,718 villages and claimed 645 lives so far, official sources said.

The floods have affected 95.71 lakh people, 11.09 lakh hectares of agricultural land and have caused a loss to crops worth Rs 255.14 crore (Rs 2.55 billion). A total of 10,937 houses have been damaged.

As many as 1,255 flood relief centres have been set up in the affected areas and 4,705 boats pressed into service to evacuate people to safer areas.
