Bush, Musharraf to meet in New York on September 24

September 17, 2003 17:57 IST

Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf would hold a one-to-one meeting with US President George W Bush in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session to discuss a host of regional and bilateral issues.

"A meeting between the two presidents will be held on September 24 morning," official media reports quoted Pakistani diplomats in the US as saying on Wednesday.

There is no chance of a meeting between Musharraf and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who too would be in New York at the same time to attend the UN General Assembly session.

Musharraf is expected to reach New York on September 21 and is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 24.

His speech at the UN was expected to focus on Indo-Pak relations, Jammu and Kashmir and steps taken by Pakistan to crackdown on Al Qaeda.

During his stay in New York, Musharraf is expected to address Pakistani-Americans on September 21, attend on September 23 a reception being hosted for heads of state attending the General Assembly, meet UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and heads of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

On September 24 afternoon, he would leave for Toronto to undertake a two-day official visit of Canada, where he is scheduled to hold talks with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

The talks would focus on expanding trade and economic cooperation between Pakistan and Canada, state run APP news agency quoted officials as saying.

On September 26, he would return to New York via Ottawa and then leave for Pakistan.
