Angry Patna residents on Monday set a police check post on fire after a businessman was shot at and seriously injured in the Rajabazar area of the state capital in the morning.

Abhay Kumar, owner of an electrical goods shop, was on his way to the airport on a motorcycle when two youths, travelling in another two-wheeler, opened fire at Kumar near the Dumra check post, police said.

Kumar was rushed to the Patna Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition, police said.

Irate locals then torched a part of the check post and chased away the policemen. They also blocked traffic on the busy Patna-Danapur Road for some time in protest against the attack.

Police suspect Kumar, also a contractor, was attacked due to business rivalry. No arrest has been made in connection with the murder but police said a manhunt has been launched for the assailants.
