Ten militants were killed in a fierce gun battle with the security forces in Kangpokpi police station area of Senapati district in Manipur early on Saturday morning, defence sources said in Imphal.

The encounter took place after the 14th Assam Rifles and the19th Rajput Rifles raided some villages in the area, about 35 km north of Imphal.

Several militants, a senior official said, managed to escape into nearby jungles and the security forces have cordoned off the area.
    
Additional Superintendent of Police Sudhir Sharma has rushed to Kangpokpi with reinforcements.
