Curfew imposed in Godhra following communal clashes

Curfew was imposed in the sensitive Godhra town following communal clashes during Ganesh festival procession, official sources said in Ahmedabad on Friday.

The sources told PTI that trouble started when the procession was passing through the Neelam Lodge and the Rani Masjid areas.

The Ganesh idols were to be immersed in the Ramsagar pond. The sources said some people in these localities started pelting stones in response to slogans that were allegedly inflammatory in nature.

The police had to lob teargas shells to control rival groups. Police. Curfew was imposed in the town at around 1800 hours IST.
