October 22, 2003 12:39 IST

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Tuesday stayed former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati's arrest till investigations were over in the Taj Heritage Corridor case.

A division bench comprising Justice Khemkaran and Justice G K Gupta also stayed the arrest of Mayawati's then principal secretary P L Punia and former secretary (environment) V K Gupta in connection with the same case.

The order also said, "The petitioners shall cooperate with the ongoing investigation and will not leave the country without written permission of the court having jurisdiction to the cognisance of the offences on the police report."

Mayawati, Punia and Gupta, accused in the case along with eight others, had filed separate writ petitions seeking stay on their arrest and quashing of the first information report in this matter. The court had on Tuesday reserved its orders on the petitions

The court, however, did not quash the FIRs.
