31 complaints of human trafficking against Daler: Punjab cops

October 21, 2003 20:26 IST

The Punjab police on Tuesday informed the Delhi high court of 31 complaints of illegal human trafficking received against bhangra-pop star Daler Mehndi.

A case has been registered against Daler and his brother, Shamsher Singh, at a Patiala police station. Shamsher has been arrested and an arrest warrant has been issued against Daler, who has gone into hiding.

Police believe Daler included people desirous of migrating to US, UK, Canada and some other countries in his musical troops whenever he toured any of these countries.

During arguments on Mehndi's plea for anticipatory bail, police counsel Atul Nanda said the singer's custodial interrogation is needed in order to make certain recoveries.

Justice S K Agrawal asked the police to file an affidavit regarding the 31 complaints received against Mehndi and adjourned the case to Thursday next.

Earlier, senior counsel R K Jain, appearing for Mehndi, argued that the singer was not likely to flee from justice and requested the court to protect him from arrest for a 'reasonable period.'
