P V Sumant has been made Assam director general of police while incumbent Harekrishna Deka will take his place as chairman-cum-managing director of Assam Police Housing Construction Limited, official sources said in Guwahati on Sunday.

The transfer comes in the wake of the controversy over an ULFA extortion demand to Hindustan Lever Limited and the prevailing unrest in the tea belt areas.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who returned from his US trip on Saturday, signed the order appointing Sumant as DGP.
