The Loreto Sisters of Dublin sent her to Calcutta in 1929. Here, she took the name 'Sister Teresa', after Saint Teresa of Lisieux, the patron of missionaries. She spent 17 years teaching and as principal of St Mary's High School.

Her words: "There is a terrible hunger for love. We all experience that in our lives -- the pain, the loneliness. We must have the courage to recognise it."
