India and South Africa on Thursday sought action within UN ambit against countries sponsoring terrorism, even as the two countries signed an extradition treaty and four other accords to enhance economic cooperation.

A joint declaration signed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and visiting South African President Thabo Mbeki said every state must be made to refrain from organising, instigating, assisting, training or participating in terrorist acts in another state.

Without naming countries sponsoring terrorism, it said that nations should not acquiesce in organised activities within its territories directed towards such terror acts.

Besides the extradition treaty, the two sides inked agreements on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, cooperation in power and hydrocarbon sectors and cultural exchange programmes for a three-year period from 2004.

The two leaders hoped to double the present trade turnover of $ 1 billion by end of next year and hoped to reach a Free Trade Agreement between India and the Southern African Customs Union by 2004 end.

During the parleys, the Indian side stressed that unity among developing nations shown during WTO Cancun meet should be maintained, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said.
