Wonder gel will smooth away years: IIT prof

Ehtasham Khan in New Delhi | October 13, 2003 17:14 IST

An Indian Institute of Technology professor has invented it. And it has got nothing to do with computers.

A wonder gel, it can smooth away your wrinkles, keep you looking youthful and even make you feel younger, says inventor Professor H M Chawla.

Professor Chawla, who teaches at IIT Delhi's chemistry department, is in Paris to present his research  -- Experiments Towards Development of Anti-Ageing Multi-Tasking Sun Screen Formulations -- at the European Sunfilters Conference to be held on October 14 and 15.

He is the only Indian among experts from 17 countries, including France, Germany, Switzerland, United States and United Kingdom. He has been working on his pet project since 1996. The research is aimed at countering the effects of sunlight and age.

Speaking to rediff.com before leaving for Paris, Professor Chawla claimed his product was different from the countless sunscreens available in the market. Sunscreens act by protecting the skin from tanning and sunburn, making it look younger and soft.

"My compound is approximately eight times more active than those currently employed in commercial sunscreens," he said.

The professor explained the aging process depends on three factors -- how you look, how you perform and how you feel. "So a person may look older or younger than his actual age depending on these three factors," he said.

According to him there are two products available in the market -- cosmetics that improve your looks and medicines that improve your performance. Any product that does both is called a 'cosmecutical,' Professor Chawla explained.

He claims his gel can make one even 'feel good.' This, he added, delays the process of aging.

"This is beyond 'cosmeceuticals.' It is 'superacosmetology.' I coined this term in 1999. It was accepted by international bodies in 2000. The paper was published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology," he said.

One can apply the gel on body parts that are exposed to sun, keep it for some time and then wash it off with water.

"After you wash it, a kind of aroma or perfume comes out. It gives you a good feeling," Professor Chawla said.

Asked about side-effects, he said only 'minimum' chemicals have been used in the compound. But he added, "Everything is toxic -- even the mosquito repellents that are commonly used. But we see at what conditions it could be used and at what conditions it could not be used."

"It does not permeate into the body and hence there is little chance of side-effects. The chemicals are also not water soluble. It does not permeate at least till 96 hours of its application," he added.
