Manipur girl accuses army personnel of molestation, commits suicide

October 07, 2003 12:43 IST

The Manipur government has set up a Commission of Inquiry to probe the facts and circumstances that led a 15-year-old girl to commit suicide after allegedly being frisked by army personnel.

The girl, from Jiribam, had complained to her mother that personnel of the 12th Grenadier Rifles had molested her during frisking. She later committed suicide by consuming poison.

A defence ministry statement on Tuesday said denied army personnel were responsible for the girl's death.

The Commission, to be headed by retired district and session judge C Upendra Singh, would fix responsibility and recommend measures for preventing recurrence of such incidents. It would submit its report within two months, a government notification said.
