Badal moves NHRC to probe 'harassment'

Onkar Singh in New Delhi | October 03, 2003 17:55 IST

Former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has moved the National Human Rights Commission for a probe into the 'harassment' of his family and Akali Dal legislators by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

He accused the chief minister of 'blatantly misusing executive powers' against former Akali ministers, legislators and members of their family.

Badal told rediff.com he had a good meeting with the NHRC Chairman Justice A S Anand.

"Justice Anand has assured us that he would do whatever is within the powers of the commission and do justice to us," Badal said.

Asked why he has sought the intervention of the NHRC, Badal said, "What is going on in Punjab is a part of the political vendetta. False cases have been registered against not only me and members of my family but against seven former ministers and their near and dear ones."

He alleged the police were using 'third degree methods' to 'extract confessions'.

"One former minister was stripped and forced to stand naked in sun. We are fighting our political and legal battle, but at the same time we want the commission to take note of what has been going on in the state in the name of investigation," he said.

Badal denied allegations that he had amassed wealth and property disproportionate to his known sources of income.

"So far they (Punjab government) have not been able to unearth any foreign account. Now they have decided to question me on October 8," he said.

Asked if he was afraid to go to jail, he said, " I have spent twenty years in jail during emergency and other times. Why should I be scared of going to jail?"
