The outlawed People's War on Friday owned up the responsibility for the assassination attempt on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The outfit also threatened that it would continue targeting politicians, police officers and others for 'working against the interests of the people'.

In a four-page statement in Telugu, faxed to the local media, the PW termed Naidu a 'dictator and a despot' and said that he had come to power in 1995 by staging a coup against Telugu Desam founder and then chief minister N T Rama Rao.

"Ever since, he (Naidu) has been implementing the World Bank agenda of globalisation and privatisation and pursuing anti-people policies to please the World bank bosses," the banned outfit said.

The PW said that those who attacked Naidu belonged to the People's Guerilla Army. "The attack was conducted as per the wishes of the people who are reeling under the impact of World Bank-dictated policies of the government," the said..

The statement also accused the police and Naidu regime of killing more than 1400 Naxalites cadres in fake encounters since 1996.
