Armitage, Rocca to visit Pakistan on October 4

K J M Varma in Islamabad | October 02, 2003 22:56 IST

US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage and Assistant Secretary Christina Rocca on Wednesday rescheduled their visit to Pakistan and would arrive in Islamabad on October 4 for talks with President Gen Pervez Musharraf and other officials.

Foreign office spokesman Masood Khan made the announcement hours after the US diplomats announced postponement of their one-day visit without giving fresh dates. Both the Afghan and the Pakistani legs of the trip had been postponed.

"The visit has been postponed due to scheduling issues," Khan had earlier told PTI while denying reports that the development was connected with a major army offensive launched on Wednesday against the Al Qaeda in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

He had also denied Armitage's observations that all army personnel were not behind Musharraf in the fight against terrorism.

Armitage and Rocca are scheduled to visit Pakistan, Afghanistan and a number of central Asian republics during their proposed tour.
