Assam wants CBI probe into violence

November 26, 2003 22:45 IST

The Assam government on Wednesday said it would seek a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the violence against Biharis, which has so far claimed 56 lives.

"We have decided to get a CBI probe because if the state government was to conduct the probe then opposition parties would allege that it was one-sided," Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said in Guwahati.

"We will be writing soon to the Centre for a CBI probe as all the facts should be revealed as to who was responsible for the attacks," he said.

He reiterated that the killings took place due to lack of security forces, and said of late 15 additional companies of paramilitary forces had arrived in the state.

"Had the paramilitary forces been present here earlier we could have perhaps avoided such unfortunate incidents," he said.

Gogoi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bajrang Dal and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of trying to incite communal passion following the backlash against Biharis.

"The RSS, BJP and the Bajrang Dal are behind attacks on Congress offices..." Gogoi said.

The CM described the situation in Assam as "absolutely normal".
