The colourful gopura of the Nageshwara Temple at Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, which was built in the ninth century, has the traditional design of the later Chola period. The Cholas were the most powerful and influential dynasty in South India and ruled a great part of southern India between 300 BC and 1250 AD.

Kumbakonam is 36 kilometres from Thanjavur, the capital of the Chola empire.
