Daler moves high court for anticipatory bail

November 07, 2003 20:30 IST

Elusive Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi on Friday filed an application in the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking anticipatory bail in two cases registered against him in a human trafficking scam and for allegedly threatening an assistant police sub-inspector through his secretary.

He has no intention of voluntarily appearing before the police, his brother Mika told PTI in Chandigarh.

Mika was present when lawyers Ravinder Kumar and Anand Parkash filed the application, which is expected to come up for hearing on Monday.

The first case against Daler was registered at the Sadar Police Station in Patiala following a complaint by Bakshish Singh, who alleged that he was not taken abroad even after paying Rs 12 lakh (Rs 45=$) to Daler. The other accused in the case are the singer's brother Shamsher, who is presently in judicial custody, Tejinder Singh Laddi, Harchand Singh and Surinder Singh.

The second case was registered on October 11 on the complaint of ASI Harminder Singh at the Civil Lines Police Station. Singh alleged that Daler's secretary had threatened him and demanded that he delete information from a computer seized from the premises of the singer.

Daler has also sought bail "in relation to future FIRs that may be registered for 32 other alleged complaints," his counsel said.

Last week, a Patiala court dismissed his plea for regular bail after the Delhi high court declined to accept his plea for extension of the 10-day interim anticipatory bail, which ended on November 1.

Patiala Civil Judge (Senior Division) P S Dhanoa had on Thursday issued fresh non-bailable warrants against Daler returnable by November 17. He also issued NBWs against nine others, including Daljit Kaur and Balwinder Kaur, wives of Daler and Shamsher, and some of their alleged associates.

Mika and Ravinder Kumar told PTI later that as per their information, Daler would use all legal options and had no plans to appear before the Patiala police.

Daler has been eluding the police since last week.

Mika and the counsel denied allegations of human trafficking against Daler, saying he had a fixed troupe of 12 members, all of whom returned after their visits abroad.
