Cases were registered on Wednesday night against members of the Hizbul Mujahideen for carrying and displaying weapons in public.

The move came a day after Pakistan said it had restricted the activities of the militant outfit. It also acquires significance in the backdrop of the statement made by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee that Pakistan should 'sincerely enforce' the restrictions imposed on the outfit.

Pakistan's private TV channel Geo said that Rawalpindi Police registered cases against two bodyguards of the outfit commander, Syed Salahuddin, for displaying weapons in public.

Hizb sources said the cases were registered after photographs appeared in local newspapers of the gun-toting bodyguards at a function organised on Tuesday to commemorate 'martyrs'.

Speaking at the function, Salahuddin had vowed to carry on with jihad to 'liberate' Kashmir. Both Salahuddin and Hizb spokesman Salem Hashmi could not be reached over phone.
