Do more to tackle terrorism: Britain to Pakistan

H S Rao in London | June 19, 2003 09:09 IST

Britain has asked Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to do more to tackle cross-border terrorism emanating from that country.

"We continue to urge President Musharraf to do all that he can as more can be done to tackle terrorism. This applies to all international partners of the coalition to fight against the scourge of terrorism. We hope we can see further progress," an official spokesman said.

"The Pakistan president also knows that the international community would expect Pakistan to deal severely against anyone using Pakistan as a safe haven," he added.

The spokesman, however, had a word of praise for the efforts made till now by Pakistan to tackle the menace.

The demand assumes significance in the backdrop of Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani's statement that there has been no let-up in infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir.

Britain, the spokesman said, wanted India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue bilaterally. "We can only help if the help is sought. But Britain has no road map to resolve the problem," he said.
