CRPF jawan kills 2 colleagues in Srinagar

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar | June 09, 2003 11:35 IST

A paramilitary jawan shot dead two of his colleagues inside the heavily guarded Central Reserve Police Force camp at Gogji Bagh in Srinagar before being gunned down by a sentry around Sunday midnight.

Kaptan Singh started firing indiscriminately inside the battalion headquarters located in the Indoor Stadium killing two colleagues on the spot, police sources said.

They were identified as Multan Singh and Mahaveer Singh.

The incident triggered panic inside the stadium and CRPF soldiers immediately took positions inside the camp.

An alert sentry manning an entrance gunned down Kaptan Singh killing him on the spot.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

There have been incidents in the past when irate jawans have turned their guns on their colleagues and senior officers.

Authorities say the tremendous stress on the troops in the course of their work may be the cause behind such incidents.

Senior police officers immediately rushed to the spot and searched the camp as a precautionary measure.
