Police firing in Assam, 7 killed

July 26, 2003 01:07 IST

Seven adivasis were killed and four critically injured when security forces opened fire on a mob that attacked them in Darrang district.

According to sources, a group of adivasis tried to close shops at Kashibeel, under Panery police station, to enforce a state-wide strike called by the All Assam Adivasi Students Association on Friday.

Some members of the All Bodo Students Union resisted the move of the adivasis and violence ensued, the sources said.

Police and a Central Reserve Police Force platoon were sent to quell the mob, the sources said.

A mob of 3000 adivasis armed with bows and arrows reached the spot, attacked the security forces and tried to snatch away their rifles, prompting the police to open fire.

Three persons were killed on the spot and eight were seriously wounded.

While three of the wounded died on the way to hospital, one succumbed to injuries later.

The adivasis then went to the local ABSU office and ransacked it, the sources said.

The situation was tense but under control, they said.
