Iranian twins laid to rest

July 12, 2003 23:47 IST

Thousands of mourners wept as Iranian twins Ladan and Laleh Bijani were buried in adjacent graves in Lohrasb village, Iran, on Saturday.

Mourners lined the hillsides and beat their chests as a cleric read from the Quran and the bodies were carried to the graveyard close to their parents' home.

Shops around Lohrasb were closed as people in black filed past the coffins.

Born joined at the head, the sisters died on the operating table in Singapore on Tuesday aged 29 in the final stages of a surgery to separate them.

Their determination to lead separate lives had touched the lives of people around the world.
