Salman pulled up for absence from court

July 02, 2003 15:25 IST

Actor Salman Khan was on Wednesday exempted from personal appearance in a hit-and-run case for the day on health grounds, but was pulled him up for his repeated absence from the court proceedings and was warned that his bail would be cancelled if he did not show up at the next hearing on September 10.

Salman is accused of culpable homicide not amounting to murder for running his Land Cruiser (Mh 01 DA 32) over some pavement dwellers in Bandra, Mumbai, on September 28 killing one and injuring four.

Salman's lawyer Sham Kumar Marwadi said his client was in the US for a stage show and was scheduled to return on Mondaybut had to stay backfor some medical treatment.

Prosecutor R V Kini opposed Salman's plea for exemption saying he had not produced a medical certificate in support of his claim and had also not specified his illness.

Kini informed the court that the prosecution was ready to examine four witnesses, including Ravindra Patil, a former police bodyguard of Salman and an eyewitness to the accident.

Of the other three witnesses, two had seen the actor getting down from the vehicle after the mishap.

The Bombay high court would hear on July 4 Salman's appeal against a trial court order rejecting his plea to drop the charge of 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' against him.

The HC had adjourned the matter on Monday after public prosecutor Sayaji Shinde sought time to file a reply.
