Middleman in kidney racket names main agent

January 29, 2003 03:24 IST

Baljit, one of the key middlemen, involved in the Rs one billion (Rs 100 crore) kidney sale scam, on Tuesday told the Special Investigation Team that Vickey Bhatia was the main agent, under whom he was working.

The SIT arrested Baljit on Monday evening while Vickey Bhatia is still at large.

According to the Inspector General (zonal) S K Sharma, Baljit, who is still a minor, during interrogation confessed that he became a middleman after selling his own kidney for a hefty amount.

Baljit told his interrogators that after coming in direct contact with the kidney mafia, he started persuading teenaged boys to sell their kidneys by offering them irresistible allurements.

So far, Baljit had managed to persuade more than 20 minors, besides several adults to sell their kidneys, Sharma said.
