January 18, 2003 21:27 IST

The Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday slapped provisions of the National Security Act on rebel BSP legislator Jai Prakash Yadav, languishing in the district jail in Gorakhpur since December 11, a senior police officer said.

The NSA was slapped on Yadav in a case of attempted murder registered against him by the Belghat police on January 12, Senior Superintendent of Police Virendra Kumar said.

Yadav is also facing two other criminal cases, registered on November six.

Earlier, Yadav, who represents Dhuriyapar constituency in the state assembly, had been booked under the Gangsters Act.
