BJP favours reopening of Bhojshala temple

February 22, 2003 17:22 IST

The Madhya Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday said it favoured restoring the conditions that prevailed for Hindus before 1995 at the Bhojshala in Dhar district of the state.

"Prayers by Hindus were held at the Bhojshala and even yagnas were conducted before 1995. These should be allowed again," state BJP organising secretary Kaptan Singh Solanki said at a news conference in Bhopal.

Solanki said his party backed the Hindu Jagran Manch demand that Muslims should not be allowed to offer namaz inside the Bhojshala. Moreover, Hindus should be allowed to offer prayer inside the Bhojshala at the place where there was an idol of Goddess Saraswati before it was taken to London, he said.

State BJP president Kailash Joshi, also present at the press conference, said his party welcomed the state government's decision to send to the Centre the recommendations of Dhar district administration on the opening of Bhojshala.

"The state government has bowed down to the wishes of the people" Joshi said, and expressed the hope that it will continue to do so in the future also. "Had the state government sent these recommendations earlier, the incidents that took place since February 18 could have been averted", Solanki said.
