December 31, 2003 04:05 IST

A 78-year-old Sikh pensioner died in hospital on Tuesday after being attacked in a Gurdwara in West Midlands on Christmas eve.

The West Midlands police, who did not identify the victim, said the man suffered head injuries. They have launched a murder inquiry into his death.

"It's believed the offenders got into the temple and threatened and attacked the victim before stealing property," a police spokesman said.

A post-mortem examination will take place later today. The victim was injured between 0300 and 0400 on December 24 at the Gurdwara Nanak in Cannock Road, Wolverhampton.

Anyone with information may contact Wednesfield CID on 0845 113 5000.
