The day of the Gay

Reverend V Gene Robinson became the first openly gay man to be consecrated an Episcopal bishop when he was consecrated bishop of New Hampshire on November 1 after months of bitter wrangling.

The consecration caused consternation among the Episcopal community, with its leader, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Reverend Rowan Williams, warning that the divisions created by the appointment would have 'very serious consequences for the cohesion of the Anglican communion.'

Less than three weeks later, on November 18, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in favor of gay marriages, saying that barring gays and lesbians from marrying violated the state constitution. Massachusetts became the third state in the US, after Vermont and California, to allow same sex marriage.
