Badal, son released from Patiala jail

December 10, 2003 14:15 IST

Shiromani Akali Dal president Parkash Singh Badal and his son, Rajya Sabha MP Sukhbir Singh, were released from the central jail in Patiala on Wednesday after a Ropar court granted them bail in a disproportionate assets case.

Ropar Special Judge S K Goyal on Tuesday had ordered that the father-son duo to be released on bail bonds of Rs 20 lakh each and two sureties of the like amount.

A large crowd of party workers had gathered outside the Central Jail to greet the former chief minister.

In a brief chat with reporters, Badal said the Akalis will soon launch state-wide programmes to counter the political vendetta unleashed by the Capt Amarinder Singh-led Congress government.

He said he will travel to Amritsar on Thursday to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple.

The party's Political Affairs Committee will meet in Chandigarh on Friday.
