Anti-Bihari violence, Judeo tape rock Parliament

The anti-Bihari violence in Assam and the Dilip Singh Judeo scandal rocked Parliament on Wednesday.

Both Houses plunged into turmoil right from the time they assembled.

Members from the Samata Party and Janata Dal-United and independent member Rajesh Ranjan stormed the well in the Lok Sabha, accusing Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi of having a hand in the violence.

The charge provoked members of the Congress, which rules Assam and supports the Rabri Devi government in Bihar, leading to heated exchanges between the two sides.

Prabhunath Singh (Samata) and Ranjan said not only were Biharis killed, but their property was also looted. And all this took place, they said, because police remained a "silent spectator".

Senior leaders like Somnath Chatterjee (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and Ram Vilas Paswan (Lok Janshakti) were seen asking angry members to go back to their seats.

The House was first adjourned till 1230 IST, and later till 1400 IST. But when there was no sign of a compromise, Speaker Manohar Joshi adjourned the Lok Sabha for the day.

The Rajya Sabha witnessed uproarious scenes over the Judeo tape controversy, as opposition parties led by the Congress demanded suspension of the Question Hour to discuss the matter and a statement from Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the issue.

The Upper House was first adjourned till 1200 IST amid pandemonium and later for the day as the members refused to relent and opposition and ruling benches traded charges.
