December 02, 2003 13:36 IST

Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned on Tuesday on the opening day of the winter session after tributes were paid to the members who died during the inter-session period.

Paying tributes to former Union minister Murasoli Maran, Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi recalled his role at the World Trade Organisation negotiations in Doha, where he had staunchly protected India's interests.

He said Maran also made immense contributions in the fields of social work and journalism.

Maran, who represented the Madras Central constituency in the House, died on November 23. He was 69.

The House also condoled the death of G Malikar Junappa. He represented the Davangere constituency in Karnataka and was member of several parliamentary committees.

Junappa died in Mumbai on November 30. He was 74.

The Rajya Sabha condoled the death of the Congress member K M Khan, who represented Andhra Pradesh, and Maran.

Earlier, Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat expressed "utmost grief and sorrow" over the killing of 52 people in the twin bomb blasts in Mumbai on August 25 and said "no words are strong enough to condemn this heinous act."

He also referred to the tragedy that struck Kumbh Mela in Nashik, where 29 pilgrims lost their lives in a stampede.
