Visitors at the Mars Encounter exhibit at the Chabot Space and Science Centre in Oakland, California, on August 26.

Hundreds of astronomy enthusiasts visited the centre in the hope of viewing Mars through high-powered telescopes.

Calculations suggest that the last time Mars and Earth were this close together was when Neanderthals roamed the latter, on September 12, 57,617 BC.
