Rains kill two more in Gujarat

August 25, 2003 23:49 IST

With two more deaths reported from Vadodara district on Monday, the toll in rain-related incidents in Gujarat since Saturday has risen to 23.

One person was electrocuted in Samraspura village while a woman drowned in turbulent waters of Narmada in Shinor village, police said.

The number of deaths this season has risen to 104, flood control department sources said.

Meanwhile, meteorological department officials said the low-pressure system hovering over the state has now crossed into Rajasthan.

At least 4,000 people in Vadodara city, Padra and Waghodia talukas have been shifted to safer places and given food packets.

Normal life was thrown out of gear in Ahmedabad, which received 14 inches of rain in less than 24 hours beginning late Saturday night. The city's municipal corporation machinery has swung into action by installing heavy-duty pumps to drain out water from low-lying areas. It is also taking steps to prevent the outbreak of malaria and other water-borne diseases, sources said.
