April 29, 2003 12:52 IST

Thirteen terrorists and six security force personnel were killed in a gun battle in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon, police sources said.

On information about the presence of a large number of terrorists, belonging to different outfits, army troops launched a cordon operation in Bharat forest area in Doda district at around 0900 IST.

The terrorists were holding a meeting of their command councils when the security forces surrounded them and asked them to surrender, the sources said.

But the terrorists opened fire and launched grenades from their vantage point.

Additional troops have been sent to the area to track down the terrorists, who are still in the cordon, they said, adding the police is assisting them in the operation.
