A two-judge bench of the Delhi high court on Wednesday began hearings on the appeals against the death sentence awarded to three men convicted for the December 13, 2001 attack on Parliament.

Special Judge S N Dhingra had in December 2002 sentenced S A R Geelani, Mohammed Afzal and Shaukat Hussain Guru to death for their role in the incident.

All three have appealed against the sentence.

The high court will conduct almost daily hearing and is expected to reinterpret the evidence in the case.

Gopal Subramaniyam will represent the prosecution while former Union law minister and eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani will fight Geelani's case gratis.

Nitya Ramkrishnan will represent Shaukat Hussain and Mohammed Afzal.

On Wednesday, Subramaniyam initiated the proceedings by briefing the court about the case.

Jethmalani will be making his submission after the prosecution lawyer concludes.

"Despite hearings on four days a week, it will take two months for the court to give its ruling in the case," Jethmalani told rediff.com

Officers of the special cell of the Delhi Police, which investigated the case, may have to be present throughout the hearings.
