Bandh cripples normal life in Manipur

A 24-hour bandh sponsored by the United Committee Manipur on Saturday brought normal life to a standstill in the state.

UCM Secretary General in-charge Oinam Ratan said the strike had been called to protest against the state government's "failure" to provide security along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway 39 and Imphal-Jiribam NH 53.

Shops and business establishments remained closed across the state while transport services were cancelled in support of the bandh.

Initial reports said the strike was total in interior districts and most of the major roads wore deserted look.

Ratan said frequent looting, extortion and crimes on the highways had brought extreme sufferings to people.

He asked why the Centre and the concerned authorities had failed to protect these highways.
