Akshardham temple attackers identified

Investigators on Friday identified as Pakistanis the two terrorists who had attacked the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar.

They were Mohammed Amjad Bhai and Hafiz Yasir from Lahore and Attock respectively.

Sources, however, said the outfit to which the terrorists belonged was yet to be ascertained, though the leaflets found from their person after they were shot dead in a commando operation indicated that they belonged to the Tehrik-e-Kasas.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Police of Gujarat, K Chakravathi, said in a statement on Friday night that the driver and owner of the car, which had ferried the terrorists from Kalupur in Ahmedabad to the temple, had been detained.

Chakravarty said the terrorists had travelled in a white Ambassador, with number plate GJ-1-U-2234.

Raju Thakur [driver] and Mansukh Acharya [owner] had said they could identify the terrorists from photographs, the DGP said.

"Both of them were later taken to a hospital cold room where they saw the bodies of the militants," he said.

Their interrogations had revealed that "they ferried the militants from Kalupur to Akshardham for a charge of Rs 120", Chakravarty said.

Preliminary investigations showed the terrorists had arrived at the Kalupur railway station between 1400 IST and 1530 IST.

They had hired the car around the time when trains from Howrah and Jammu reached the station.

Experts were examining the boots, clothes and the ammunitions recovered from the site of the incident, the DGP said.
