Indian students in Boston condemn temple massacre, call for peace

Soon after the attack on the Swaminarayan temple in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Indians students in the Boston area got together to appeal for peace.

In a statement the students from Boston said, 'We fervently hope that the people of Gujarat and the rest of India will maintain peace and harmony. We urge people from across the country to form peace committees to guarantee the safety of their neighbours of all communities. Only by remaining steadfastly united can we, the people of India, foil the designs of the perpetrators of violence.'

The statement was supported by organizations such as the South Asian Center, Boston, Sangam, Association for India's Development and Insaniyat. Sangam is the Indian Student Association at the famed Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

'The text condemning the killing and our call for peace is included at this page. People who want to support our cause can send in their comments using a form on the same page. These comments would be compiled and sent to the Indian embassy in the US and to the prime minister in India,' MIT student Anoop V Rao wrote in an email to rediff.com

The Federation of Aligarh Alumni Associations has also condemned the terrorism, describing it as a 'vicious and cowardly act.' The Association offered condolence to the families of those who killed in the tragedy.

Federation president Dr A Abdullah said in a statement, 'There is no cause that justifies this type of inhumane and immoral act that has affected so many innocent lives. We support all efforts for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators.'
