Manipur cut off from rest of country

G Vinayak in Guwahati

Manipur was severed from the rest of India on Wednesday after a Joint Action Committee of local transporters decided to suspend bus services on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway 53 as a mark of protest against frequent incidents of harassment of passengers.

The JAC's decision came as the state government, led by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, was making efforts to reopen National Highway 39, the only other road linking Manipur to the rest of the country, which was being blocked by the United Committee, Manipur.

The transporters suspended the bus services after unidentified armed persons reportedly assaulted three passengers at Nungba Bazar area on Monday.

The miscreants dragged out the three passengers, including two members of Satjal, a local organisation, and let the bus go. The passengers were later beaten up and asked not to travel along the route.

The transporters were using this route after the UCM blocked the Imphal-Dimapur road in the wake of an incident on September 5 at Pephima in which armed thugs allegedly looted three Manipur-bound buses and molested two passengers.

The incident had created fresh tension between Nagaland and Manipur since the thugs who tried to molest the Manipuri women were Nagas.

The chief minister is currently in New Delhi in an effort to find a solution to the issue.
